A Moral Compass – Making Tough Decisions
Activity: “Would You Rather” game (see attached)
MUSIC:
Intro: It has been estimated that we face up to 35,000 choice every day! A Cornell University study found that we make approximately 226 decisions every day…about food! Here’s the thing: choices have consequences –good or bad. Wear a seatbelt or not? Do your homework or not. Get a job or not. Get out of bed or not 😊 How do we make decisions? What guides our choices?
PROVERBS 2:6-11 A Moral Compass…what does yours look like?
How do you make decisions about what is right and what is wrong (what are your moral compasses?)
- Compare answers and point out how difficult it is to follow all of those compasses at the same time!
- What happens when someone lacks ANY moral compass?
- Christianity offers a single moral compass that is both deeper and more dependable.
- Christianity gives us a moral compass rooted in God’s truth and love.
PSALM 119:105 Moral Direction for Believers
- What is the difference between being “good” and being “righteous” (right with God)?
- The source of morality is God…who is the author of objective morality.
- Jesus is our model and example of a humble, compassionate, loving, serving, life of faith.
- The Holy Spirit is our perfect guide between right and wrong.
- PROVERBS 3:5-6 | ROMANS 12:2 | JEREMIAH 17:9
CONSIDER THESE SITUATIONS:
- A friend cheats on a test and asks you not to tell.
- You see hurtful comments being made online.
- You’re tempted to lie to avoid getting in trouble.
- “What would your instincts say?”
- “How might your faith change your response?”
SUMMARY
We face a sometimes-overwhelming number of decisions daily. Some major, some minor, but all require a choice to be made. God offers us a moral compass based on God’s Word (Bible), God’s Living Word (Jesus), and God’s Holy Spirit. We all need help living with integrity, courage, love, and faith and God makes his compass available to anyone who believes.
