April 3 Day 25
1 Peter 5:6
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
REFLECTION
One of the ways our sin nature resists God is our self-love. This is not the spiritually healthy love Jesus alluded in Matthew 22:39, “…love your neighbor as yourself.” It is our lack of humility that has its roots in the worship and glorification of ourselves. It takes honest humility and a humbled spirit to submit to God’s will rather than our own.
“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less” is a paraphrase of C.S. Lewis perspective on Christian humbleness. When we commit to Christ we don’t only accede to our Savior as Lord, but disclaim our arrogance, self-seeking, and idolatrous values…laying them at the foot of the Cross. When we do, we reveal not only a repentant heart, but a trust in God’s timing in our lives.
PRAYER: Lord, pry our hands free from our grip on our future, our desires, and our plans. Open them up to humbly accept the gifts of the kingdom, finding true peace and profound joy that our own schemes and dreams could never provide. We willingly accept the yoke of discipleship that Jesus offers and place our faith in God’s timing alone. AMEN
