Matthew 5:5
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”
REFLECTION
This is where non-believers often stumble. Because meekness in the world sounds weak, submissive, and yielding. But meekness in God’s kingdom is power restrained, damage withheld, and control through wisdom. We have a great deal of strength based on our agency and unique creation in the image of God! The non-believer bends that strength to achieve power, celebrity, or recognition. The follower of Jesus never exercises strength to hurt, to demean, or to diminish others.
Disciples seek to emulate their master in every way, and Jesus described himself as, “gentle and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29). Following in Jesus’ footsteps, we entrust our reputation with God alone, we refuse to return evil for evil, and we don’t seek credit for our service to others. The world says, “Take what you can.” Jesus says, “Receive what the Father gives.” True disciples do not seek to seize the world…but faithfully await their inheritance.
PRAYER: Lord, help us to exercise what power we have, what influence we wield, and what resources we control, to love our neighbor and glorify your holy name. We repent of our need to control, to seek revenge, to protect our pride, and to judge those that you alone are worthy to judge. Make us meek following the example of Jesus. AMEN
