Matthw 5:6
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
REFLECTION
Unless you have experienced true hunger, verging on starvation, or known painful thirst, it can be difficult to grasp the depth of these needs. But if you can recall the power of your first love, or experienced the profound desire for something you lack – education, income, a place to live – you can begin to understand the level of hunger and thirst that Jesus is referring to here.
Now, imagine being starved for a right standing before God; to have a deep thirst for right living before God. We can only receive the former through grace, and the latter can only be produced by grace! During Lent we will benefit from examining our lives and being honest with ourselves about our desires: is it for approval, for control, to be comfortable, or to indulge our appetites?
This is the season to use scripture, prayer, fasting, and giving, to replace those worldly desires with a true hunger and thirst for righteousness – to be right with God and right with others.
PRAYER: Lord, make us dissatisfied with shallow faith. Give us a holy hunger for Your righteousness. Pour out your Holy Spirit to develop fruits worthy of repentance in us. Fill us with Christ, that we may live as true disciples. AMEN
