Matthew 5:13
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”
REFLECTION
In the Introduction, it was noted that the Sermon on the Mount” is not an aspirational guide, but a measure of our transformation in Christ. This is nowhere more evident than in this verse. Jesus does not call us to “be” salt but confirms that we already are! The only question is the quality…the saltiness…of our faith. When the world see our lives, do they taste the gloriously savory character of God?
As true disciples, we are called to work as salt in this world – not only enhancing but also preserving from decay. These enhancing and preserving qualities have been the hallmark of the Church over the long centuries. But what if we, the salt, have lost all taste and no longer act to slow the decay of this broken cosmos? Has our worship lost conviction? Are our prayers simple transactional formulas? Is there hypocrisy in our profession of faith that is exposed in our values and lack of spiritual fruit?
PRAYER: Lord, show us the things that are diluting our devotion to you. Fill us again with a faith that is distinctive: humble, faithful, and useful in your hands. Sanctify our walk with you so our lives serve to preserve and give flavor to the world around us. AMEN
