Who Am I…Really?
Activity: Role play: have two youth introduce themselves as if they were strangers. What do they ask and what do they offer? How do we want others to see us? Who are we…really?
Who are you? Have everyone fill out card and see if we can guess from your description.
If someone picked up your cell phone, what could they tell about you as a person by what they find there? What is most important to you?
MUSIC:
Intro: Do grades, sports, social media, jobs, or hobbies decide who we are.? Those things change! The problem is that all of those things change. One bad grade, one fight with a friend, one embarrassing moment—and suddenly your “identity” feels crushed. This evening we’re going to talk about how Christianity gives us an identity that lasts.
GENESIS 1:27 “You are loved…no matter what”
- What does it mean to be created in God’s image? How are humans different than other living creatures? (love, creativity, awareness of time, connection to our Creator, understanding of objective morality)
- How does it feel knowing that God says you have value already…before you do anything? That your value is not based on your “doing” but on God’s “loving”?
- Our identity starts here: “I’m loved by God.”
ROMANS 12:5 “You belong!”
- How important is it to feel like you belong…on your team, in your school, in your family, or with your friends? What does it feel like when you don’t fit in?
- The difference between being a member of God’s family and anything in this world is that you are unconditionally accepted and your belonging does not change with circumstances or even time!
EPHESIANS 2:10 “You have a purpose”
- What is something that you are good at? That you really enjoy?
- How might God use that talent or passion for something bigger than yourself?
- Why are you here? What is the purpose of your life? Who decides?
EPHESIANS 2:8-9 “You are who you are…not what you do”
- I what areas of your life do you feel the most “performance pressure”?
- How would it feel if your “worth” had nothing to do with your “doing” and everything to do with your “being”?
- “I don’t have to earn God’s love—I already have it.”
2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 “You always have hope!”
- How do you feel about yourself when you make a BIG mistake?
- If you know God is always willing to forgive you…would that help you cope and move on from your stumbles?
- “In Christ, you are forgiven, you are new, and you have hope.”
SUMMARY
If someone asked you tomorrow “who are you?” would you answer differently after this evening’s discussion?
The world says, “You are what you achieve.”
Jesus says, “You are mine.”
Christianity helps us form an identity that is secure (loved by God), connected (belonging to His people), purposeful (called to serve), and resilient (rooted in grace and hope).
